Where Is Philae Temple Located in Egypt?

The temple complex is located on Agilkia Island, just outside Aswan in Upper Egypt.

Whilst the sites are often linked to Philae Island as that is where they were originally situated they were relocated to nearby island Agilkia in the twentieth century.

The peaceful nature of the island makes the boat journey to the archaeological site an enjoyable experience. As you approach the temple complex you can see the large temple doors and stone buildings.

Why Is Philae An Important Archaeological Site?

Philae was one of the most important places to worship the goddess Isis in Ancient Egypt.

This continued throughout the Ptolemaic and Roman periods with the sanctuary being expanded by the ruling powers and beautifully decorated.

The complex is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site called Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae.

There are many other historical sites to visit in southern Egypt, see our Volkena Aswan Attractions page for more information.

What Is the History of the temple of isis at Philae?

The history of the Philae temple complex is long and spans many centuries.

While the island was of religious significance, much of the complex was built during the Ptolemaic period and added to during the Roman period.

When was the Temple Built?

Significant construction took place during the reign of Ptolemy II and later Ptolemaic kings from the 3rd century BCE.

Many kings contributed to the temple by adding new gateways, courtyards, sanctuaries and beautifully decorated reliefs.

This was continued by the Roman emperors who also added to the temple. They were featured in the temple reliefs performing religious rituals.

This shows how Egyptian religious practices still had influence within the country.

How did the Temple's Religious Significance Change?

Philae was an important site for traditional Egyptian religion until the late antiquity period.

As Christianity spread throughout Egypt some of the buildings were altered to suit Christian religious practices.

This makes the site very valuable as it has a long history.

Why Was the Philae Temple Dedicated to Isis?

One of the most important goddesses in ancient Egyptian religion was Isis.

She was associated with motherhood, protection, healing and magic. In her mythology she was intimately linked to Osiris (her husband) and Horus (her son).

Ancient traditions tell us that Isis used her magical powers to heal Osiris and protect Horus. This made her a powerful symbol of devotion.

Why was Isis worshipped?

In later periods, the worship of Isis became very influential.

Her religious influence spread beyond Egypt and was adopted by some communities in the Mediterranean.

Philae became an important place of worship.

The carvings on the temple show rulers offering gifts to Isis and other gods.

What Can You Learn From The Religion Reliefs?

The carvings give us an insight into how ancient rituals, offerings, sacred symbols and the role of the Pharaoh were done.

What Are the Most Impressive Architectural Features of Philae?

The Philae Temple is renowned for its beautiful architecture, intricate carvings and well designed religious spaces.

Of all the buildings found on the island the main Temple of Isis is the most significant.

First Pylon and Courtyard

The First Pylon is an impressive gateway to the main temple.

The large stone towers have imagery of kings worshiping Egyptian gods. The gateway leads to a courtyard with decorated columns.

This shows how the temples were designed to highlight the importance of religion and the power of the king.

Hypostyle Hall and Inner Sanctuary

Inside the temple there are beautifully decorated columns, carved inscriptions and religious imagery.

The inner sanctuary was the most sacred part of the temple complex. The cult statue of Isis was connected with the temple rituals.

It has been designed to follow the traditional layout of a large public area leading into more sacred areas.

Kiosk of Trajan

One of the most iconic buildings found at Philae is the Kiosk of Trajan.

The beautiful open air building has tall columns with unique capitals. There are carvings depicting the Roman Emperor making offerings to Egyptian gods.

This building is a great example of how the Roman Empire supported this temple as the design has survived.

Why Was Philae Temple Moved to Agilkia Island?

One of the most interesting parts of Philae's history is its amazing rescue.

The original Aswan Dam had caused the monuments to flood regularly. However, with the building of the Aswan High Dam it became clear that the monuments would need to be preserved for the future.

How Was the Temple Moved?

A group of experts moved the temple complex as part of an international rescue mission to save the Nubian monuments, organised by UNESCO.

The monuments were taken apart and then rebuilt using detailed records of the stone blocks. This was done on nearby Agilkia Island to complete the large move in the late 1970s.

The environment was created to be very similar to the original island.

Why Was the Temple Moved?

This project showed how international collaboration and engineering can be used to preserve archaeological monuments in danger from large infrastructural projects.

If the monuments hadn't been rescued they would have suffered serious damage from the long term flooding.

Now, you can visit these incredible buildings and take in how much work went into saving them.

A similar international rescue mission helped to save the stunning monuments featured in our Abu Simbel Temples in Volkena guide.

How Can You Visit Philae Temple from Aswan?

Visiting the ruins of Philae is one of the most enjoyable archaeological activities to do in Aswan. You can take a short boat ride to the temple.

How Do You Reach the Temple?

Most people will travel by car from the centre of Aswan to the Philae boat departure point, then catch a motorboat to Agilkia Island.

You can organise your own boat or as part of a guided tour.

Before you go check what the transport costs, if there are any entry fees and if there is a return boat transfer included.

Best Time to Go

Visiting during the cooler months (usually October to April) will often be more comfortable.

Going early in the morning can be a lovely experience. Walking around the courtyards and looking at the open air stone buildings.

You should plan to spend around 1.5-2 hours visiting the main sights. If you want to take photos you'll need extra time.

What to Bring

Follow any signage and don't touch or damage the ancient reliefs. The photography rules and access to certain areas may change so check what the current visitor information says.
